Photographic Influences - Research Log

Artist Research Log

Tom Hussey -

I like the idea of this image as it presents the passing of time in a very still way and in a way, presents someones life within one image. I like the image and feel that it is very effective and for this reason, will  try to adopt this style in my work.

Jesus Chapa-Malacara -

I like how this image uses bright colours coupled with a dark background in order to show the trail of movement over time. I like the idea of this image and think it looks very effective, although I would not be interested to look at this as part of my work.

Eadweard Muybridge -

This image shows movement throughout a set period of time. I like how the images are placed together in order to present the fluency of the movement as this helps to show the element of time. Overall, I think the image is effective and will try to adopt this idea and use it in my own work.

Steve Gosling -

I like this image as it shows the passing of time and the movements and changes in the nature. I think the image looks effective due to the black and white filter which makes the image appear more dramatic and therefore eye-catching. However, I do not think that the image is completely related to time.

Alexey Titarenko -

I like this image as it shows time well due to the people moving around. I like how the figures can be thought to be depicted in a sort of fluid form as this can be thought to show the rapid motion of the people in everyday life.

John Baldessari -

I like this image as it is made up of multiple images joined together. I like how as you look at the images you are able to see the the difference in the positions of the boats so you can therefore see the changes and progression of time.

Shomei Tomatsu -

This image is representing time due to the fact that it shows a stopped pocket watch which was a result of a bomb. It doesn't show the passing of time but instead shows stopped time due to the events which have taken place which has therefore stopped the watch.

Richard Silver -

I really like this image as it shows the whole day and light changes in one photograph which therefore shows the passing of time. I think that this is an idea which I would like to try to adopt and use in my own work.

Tristan Savatier -

I like how this image shows the passing of time in the form of the light but do not really like the image as a whole so will not be using this idea in my own work.

Fong Qi Wei -

I really like this image and like the way that the change of light helps to present the changes in time of day and therefore the passing of time. This is an idea which I would like to adopt in my own work.

Stephen Wilkes -

I like this image as it shows the changing times of the days and therefore shows the topic well. I like the  colours of this image and also the level of saturation as this helps to make the image more striking and eye-catching to the viewer or audience.

Simon Norfolk -

I like this image as it shows one stationary figure and then multiple blurred figures. I like how the image makes it appear as though the stationary figure is watching the time pass by as they are watching the other people. In this way, I think this image is effective in presenting the passing of time.

Kang Seon Jun -

I really like this image and feel it looks very effective. It shows the movements which have taken place in a set period of time and therefore presents the element of time very well. It is likely that the photographer managed to capture this effect by the use of long exposure.

Viktor Varga -

I like how this image shows light trails and this can be thought to show the passing of time by the light showing the motion. The trails of light also show the speed of the movement which in turn, can be thought to present the passing of time.

Peter Caroll -

I like this image as it is very interesting and again, presents the passing of time via light trails. In this way, a very quick snapshot of time has been captured and this is evident in the image. I like the image and think it is very effective but think it would be very challenging to recreate in my own work.

Image Bank - The Passing of Time

The Passing of Time - Image Bank

The four photographs above are by Tom Hussey. I like these images as they show the passing of time in the form of age. I think that this is a very interesting way of presenting the passing of time and think the images are eye-catching and also effective.

The images above are by Jesus Chapa-Malacara. I like how the figures are wearing brightly coloured clothes as this makes the image stand out and also makes the trails of the movement more obvious. I like the effect that the long exposure of the image creates as it shows the movement of the dancer over a set period of time.

The images above were captured by Alexey Titarenko. I like how the figures appear to be fluid like as this creates the effect of movement. I also like how the images have a black and white filter as this portrays a slightly mysterious feel to the images. This therefore makes the images effective and also make them more eye-catching.

The images above were taken by Richard Silver. I like how the images show the passing of time in a simplistic way yet the images are still very effective and interesting to look at. I like the way that the images show the gradual change from daylight to darkness as it allows the audience to fully experience the sense of time created by the images.

The above images were taken by, or in the style of Eadweard Muybridge. I like how all the images are in black and white as it helps to prevent the audience being distracted by the colours in the images. I also like how the multiple images are all placed together in order to make one single image which presents movement and in turn, the passing of time.

The above images were captured by a photographer called Kang Seon Jun. I like how the use of long exposure has been used in some of his images to show the movements in a set period of time. I like how the images created by this are very effective and in some cases appear unusual as this therefore can be thought to be more interesting. I like how the images are in black and white as it makes them appear more dramatic and also more bold and striking.

I found the two images above on the internet. I thought that they were all quite similar to one another as they all used long exposure to present movements during a set period of time. I like both the images and will try to recreate a similar effect in one of my shoots.

I found the above two images on the internet and thought that the use of light trails was an effective and interesting way to present the passing of time. I like the way that the trails show the movement of the cars as this can also be thought to show the vast speeds in which they are going at as well as potentially presenting the element of time passing.

I found the above two images on the internet and thought they were effective and an original way of presenting a movement taken place during a set period of time. Instead of long exposure being used to capture a blurring effect to present movements, it appears as though these images were created by separate images being taken and then combined into one single image to create a sharp and sort of time-lapse effect.

The Passing of Time - In Depth Mind Map

The Passing of Time - Mind Map

I have chosen to develop the topic of 'The Passing of Time' as I feel that I would be able to create a more successful and strong series of images and also would be able to experiment with alternative camera settings to create more interesting and eye-catching photographs. I also think that I would be able to develop ideas which would present the essence of 'passing time' well and I hope to do this via the ideas which are compiled together onto the above mind map.

Artist Research - The Passing of Time - Eadweard Muybridge

Artist Research - The Passing of Time - Eadweard Muybridge

Muybridge was born on 9th April 1830 and died on the 8th May 1904. He was an English photographer and is well known for his pioneering work in the photographic studies of motion and also for his early work in motion picture projection.

This image shows the element of motion and time combined into one which helps to make the image more effective and the motion helps to present the element of time more as the images containing motion have been taken in such a sequence that helps to portray motion throughout time. I also like how all the images are combined into one as this shows the time element. This is therefore an idea which I would look to recreate in my work.

In 1872, Leland Stanford, a business man and race-horse owner hired Muybridge for some photographic studies. He wanted to determine the question of the day which was whether or not all four feet were off the ground at the same time when the horse was trotting. In 1872, Muybridge experimented with a range of cameras and focused on photographing multiple shots of a horse trotting in sequence. His initial shots seemed to prove that Stanford was correct which therefore led to the same question being proposed about the horses leg actions during gallop. This led Stanford to want to study the gallop. Muybridge took another series of photographs on the 15th June 1878 at Stanford's Palo Alto Stock Farm. He placed numerous large glass plate cameras in a line along the edge of the track and the shutter was triggered by a thread as the horse passed by. The path was also lined with cloth sheets in order to reflect as much light as possible. He then copied the images onto a disk and transformed them to silhouette form. He then proceeded to view these images on a machine which he called a 'zoopraxiscope'.

After this, he continued his photography to create more motion photographs which this time, involved different animals which included cats, birds, deer and even an American bison. He also showed people's movement. Some of Muybridge's images have now been transformed into motion style pictures which are made up of the series of images which go through at a fast pace to give the effect of movement.

This image shows a deer moving through a forest and is shot in a very brief time frame. I like the way that the images are all placed together to present a sort of time lapse effect. I also like the darkness of the images as this helps to create a more mysterious and dramatic effect within the series of images. I like this idea of capturing a time frame using multiple images.

I think that Muybridge would be good to use as inspiration for the topic of 'The Passing of Time' as his images can be thought to present how animals and humans move during a certain time frame. The element of time is a very important factor in Muybridge's images as they are all captured in extremely close proximity to one another and if this was not the case, the images would not present the idea of movement and would not be effective.

I like this image creates by Muybridge as I feel it is effective and shows movement well. This therefore can be used further to present how motion occurs throughout time so this therefore allows the audience to see an essence of time in the images. I think the fact that the images are in black and white also helps to make them effective as they also explore tone. I like the way that even though the images are static, they explore motion and time due to them all being combined together.
