Artist Research - Richard Silver

Richard Silver

Richard Silver is a New York photographer. He has visited a wide range of countries and his love for travel has given him many opportunities to shoot in different cities and of different cultures. Some of his images can be thought to present the passing of time due to him having created photo joiner style pieces which show a certain area throughout a certain time period showing daylight and darkness. He calls these photographs 'time slice'.

I like this image as it shows the passing of time well by showing the contrast of day and night. I like how the image on its own would be quite boring but with the added element of the editing, it is very effective. I like how it clearly presents an element of time.

This image is very effective and I also like the use of the editing to show the contrast between day and night. The thin slices of each photo is also very effective as it shows the gradual development of day to night and therefore gives the image a feel of time passing but in an accurate way.

This image is very interesting and I feel it shows the most contrast of day and night due to the added element of the lights in the image which helps the building to stand out and be eye-catching on the right hand side of the image. I think the fact that the lights are coloured also helps to make the image more striking.

This image is also effective and I especially like how it shows the difference in people in the different slices of images. This shows how the location has altered throughout the day in which the images were taken. In this image, the change in sky colour is especially noticeable and effective. Like the image above, it also has the added elements of the bright lights standing out on the dark background.

This image shows a building throughout the time period of a day. I like how with this image you are able to see the different people at the different times of day and you can see that there are less people at the early and late times of day. It makes the image effective as it not only presents time but also presents the idea of different people's lifestyles.

Influence -
Richard Silver has influenced me as his work has made me think of adopting the ideas of photo joiner style images into my work when presenting time. His work has also made me think about perhaps looking into the element of the passing time in the form of a 24 hour period which would explore similar elements as his images.

Summary -
Overall, I really like Richard Silver's work and feel that it has been very inspirational and has given me many ideas which I will try to adopt and use in my own work when I respond to the 'passing of time' brief. I like how he looks at the contrast of day and night and also like the editing technique which leads to a sort of photo joiner style effect on his final images.
