Connecting Essay 4
Internet Photograph
This image shows a person sleeping using long exposure. It has recorded their movement as they sleep and I think that it is very effective. I like how the image is in black and white as this helps to give a more ghostly and mysterious feel to the photo. I also like how the figures appear quite pale and like how you are able to see all the seemingly frequent arm movements as this gives the image an interesting and also slightly unnerving feel which I think is important when provoking a response from the audience.
My Photograph
This photograph was taken by myself in the studio. I put it in black and white as I felt that it gave the image a more mysterious and unnerving feel which I thought was important in order to attract attention from the audience. I like the way that you are able to see multiple versions of the people and especially like the various arm positions that you are able to see as a result of the long exposure. I also like the contrast between the light and dark in the image as I think that this makes the image more bold and striking.
The Connection
Although not completely the same, the above two images are similar in a number of ways. Firstly, the fact that they are both in black and white gives them a more sinister and unnerving feel with therefore helps to grab the audience's attention and add interest to the image. I also like the slightly ghostly feel that the images give off is especially interesting as it helps the viewer to think more deeply about the image. The fact that you can also see multiple versions of the people in the images gives them the same feel and look as this clearly shows the movements which have taken place in a set period of time. However, there are a few differences which include the fact that the internet image shows a person sleeping whereas my image shows people moving around. Also, the internet image is likely to have had a longer exposure than my image due to its nature. Overall the images are rather similar and both clearly show the passing of time in an interesting and effective way.
