Shoot 4 - Work Record

Shoot 4 - Work Record

Date of Shoot -
23rd March 2016

Plans for the shoot -
My plans for this shoot is to explore light trails using long exposure to show the passing of time. I feel that this would be an interesting idea to look into for the topic of the passing of time. I plan to go to a motorway bridge near to where I live and take photographs of the cars going underneath in the dark. This would potentially create some very interesting and effective images showing light trails. I would plan to have my shutter speed at around 10 seconds although I may have to adapt these depending on what my images turn out like. In addition, I could explore the idea of light trails by getting someone to draw shapes with a light as this looks very effective in some of the images that I have researched.

What I hoped to achieve -
I hoped to achieve some images which showed light trails using long exposure and a slow shutter speed. I hoped that this would show the passing of time by showing the movement which has occurred during a certain time period. I think that this will hopefully be an interesting location shoot which will help me develop the technique of using long exposure. I also hoped that some of my images would turn out like the images I researched on the internet as these looked very effective and interesting.

What I actually achieved -
I achieved some effective and eye-catching images during my shoot. I think that the shoot helped me to perfect my settings when using long exposure. I like the outcomes and think that they show the passing of time well due to the slow shutter speed. For the majority of my images, I had my camera on aperture priority mode and mainly had a shutter speed which ranged between 2 seconds to about 6 seconds. During my shoot, I also decided to take photos of light trails using a torch. Although these are not as effective as my motorway shots, these served the function of helping me to further understand how to use the long exposure technique to create successful images. Below shows some images from my shoot.

This was my favourite image from the shoot. I like the way that the light trails are constant and are also bright and vibrant. The sky is also slightly coloured as it has an orange tint which makes the image look more interesting and therefore effective. For this image, I used a shutter speed of around 6 seconds and had my camera on aperture priority mode. I like the outcome and feel it shows the passing of time well but in a unique way.

This image is one of my least favourite images from the shoot. This was shot without a tripod and the outcome clearly shows this. In some ways the light trails look quite interesting and they are not straight but I do not think this looks effective as they clearly are not meant to be like this. Also, the motorway is not central in the image so in my opinion, this image is not very successful.

What I plan to do next (progression) -
After this shoot, I plan to progress the use of the long exposure to the idea of movement. I think I could create some effective images in this way, especially in the studio and I would use Kang Seon Jun and Jesus Chapa-Malacara as inspiration. I think that this would help to show the passing of time by the use of the long shutter speeds which would capture a set movements during a certain period of time. I think that looking at movement using long exposure could also link to Alexey Titarenko as the long exposure used in his images makes the figures look quite ghostly which looks very effective.
