Artist Research - Tom Hussey

Tom Hussey

Tom Hussey is an American photographer who specialises in commercial advertising and lifestyle photography. He was educated at Southern Methodist University. Hussey has worked for a range of clients on local, national and international scales. In 2010, he produced a 'reflections' campaign for a drug company. This 'reflections' campaign is what I found interesting when investigating the passing of time.
I chose this artist and his work as I found the work inspirational as the age differences showed the element of time passing very well. I will try to use this idea in the future in my work as I feel it is a very effective series and I also think that it would clearly show the passing of time in my work.

This image shows a woman who is at work but then has an added reflection which depicts the woman looking ill and appearing to be ready for an operation. This shows the changing time as well as changing circumstances which can be viewed as presenting the passing of time. I also think that the image has a slightly ghostly feel to it as the reflection appears to be watching the woman.

This image is also very similar to the one above. It again, presents the passing of time and the changes in circumstances. I like the composition of the image as it is very bright and this makes it more eye-catching and striking for the audience.

I really like this image as it shows the passing of time through the form of changing age. This element is clearly presented by the elderly man looking in the mirror and seeing a reflection of his younger self. The image is also effective as it shows the memories of the man via the refection. It can also be thought to show things about the man in the photograph, such as his former job.

I like this image as the woman appears to be looking into the mirror and recalling her memories. I like how the woman appears to be looking at a version of her younger self in the image. The image is very effective and shows the passing of time very well. For this reason, I will try to adopt this style in my own work.

This image, again shows an elderly man looking at a reflection in the mirror. The reflection appears to be showing the man's former self and gives the audience an idea of his former profession. It shows how times have changed as in the reflection, the man is stirring a test tube whereas the elderly man is stirring a cup of tea.

Influence -

The above images and work by Tom Hussey has inspired me for the topic of 'the passing of time' because of the simplistic but effective approach that the images take to the topic. I like how the images show the passing of time in the form of age as this shows the topic more obviously.

Summary -

In conclusion, I have learnt that the passing of time could be demonstrated in a more basic way and therefore could make the topic more obvious via the images being more simplistic. I think the element of age in the image as this makes the idea of time passing more obvious which therefore would make my work more successful.
